How to Determine Year by the VIN on a Kawasaki. This is the year designator. This number will be either 1 through 9 or A through Y (excluding I, O, Q and U). Determine the year of the motorcycle. VIN years started in 1971 with the number '1', then went to '2' in 1972, '3' in 1973, and so on. In 1980, the digit switched to 'A'. Let's look at an example of a motorcycle frame/VIN number: 5 = the ninth digit, this is a randomly placed code used to make the number completely unique C = the tenth digit - 'the identifier' - a year of manufacture of 1982 as seen on out chart below. M101581 = the last digits are used to make the number unique.
Hey guys.
We have a customers bike in our shop...customer thinks its a 2010, but he just recently got it. We tore it down, it has a 2009 piston which set off red flags obviously.
There are no numbers in the frame...they haven't been filed off or anything, they just simply aren't there at all. We have never came by this before and are hoping for some help.
The engine serial number is KX250WE011***
After doing some research I've discovered that both 2009 and 2010 started with KX250WE....But not sure how many 2009s were made before they swapped to 2010's...
Can anyone shed any light or help?!

There are differences in the crankshaft width (which changed the cases) oil pump, and transmission cluster between 2009 and 2010 250F's.
Not sure how to distinguish the year by serial numbers, though.

Yea...i noticed there were those, a few differences in transmission gears and shift drum, but nothing really obviously of course! haha
2009 and 2010 were both KX250WE...but at some point after they were done selling the 2009s, anything after a certain number would be a 2010..but no way of knowing it seems.

Kawi dont provide the info to tell a year of the engine number, and its a pain in the ass at times,
replacement frames dont come with serial numbers, and you are ment to stamp it with the original, but i have never seen it done, but i have not seen many frames replaced either (only really on street bikes)
